K.A.R. has begun to develop a product line whose focus is useful and practical upgrades for the classic Mustang. Every product has been installed and tested on K.A.R. Mustangs. K.A.R. has created some of the products while others are useful products from reliable manufacturers or distributors.
Every STE product exclusively produced or offered by K.A.R. begins with a need for such a product. Once a need is identified and developed as a paper design,

it then progresses to a series of protypes, and ends up as a tried and tested practical product for you the Classic Mustang enthusiast. Take our STE SHIFTER AND KNOB for Classic Mustangs equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission as an example. We noticed while driving a Mustang equipped with the 5-speed transmission and simulated original shifter handle that most people doing this conversion utilize, the handle was too far from the driver for ease of shifting. The handle also was also positioned a little too high for comfort. To solve these issues we developed a crude prototype shifter handle design out of metal. Testing of this design led to additional crude prototypes and finally finished units for testing. You will note from the attached picture that the first finished prototype's mounting hole structure was shorter than what turned out to be the finished unit.

During testing we learned that the shorter mounting surface worked great in Mustangs without a floor console. They would not however clear the console during shifting in Mustangs equipped with a floor console. This problem was solved by extending the mounting surface upward. The shifter now has ample clearance and works perfectly.
Selecting shifter handle threat pattern was very important.We wanted the thread pattern on the handle to accept most

shifter knobs that are offered for the late model Fox Body Mustangs equipped with the 5-speed transmission. This would provide both K.A.R. and the Mustang enthusiast with a wide variety of shifter knob choices. We accomplished this goal.
