Car Years: 1966

Description:

This is an unrestored original California car.  K.A.R. brought this fastback from California in 1991.  It was sold to a local hobbiest.  This car has been garaged and has never seen rain or snow in the 18 years it has resided in Ohio.

This fastback was repainted 22 years ago prior to leaving California.  The paint job was a quick and inexpensive repaint.  The paint today is faded and has numerous chips or nicks.  The pictures will make the paint look better than it will look in person.  This fastback will require a repaint to really make it look great.

The interior received an amateur partial restoration years ago.   K.A.R. has just totally restored the front and rear seats.  We replaced the front seat buns and installed new upholstery front and rear.  We did this in the event a new owner wanted to drive the car awhile prior to restoring it.  Other than clean up we have no other plans for the interior.   Like the exterior, the interior deserves a full restoration.   The biggest deficiency is the headliner, which absolutely needs to be replaced.   Other than the headliner, we believe a patient amateur could restore this fastback’s interior.

The engine compartment is very clean and, obviously, well cared for.   The former owner felt that the 35,434 miles were original but could not substantiate that.   K.A.R. removed a valve cover to check the cleanliness of the engine.   It is very clean.   Handwritten records in the file indicate the following:

  • Fastback purchased new in 1966
  • Sold in 1971 with 23,000 original miles
  • Driven 9,000 miles by second owner until the engine seized at 32,000 miles; cause and extent of damage unknown.
  • Fastback sat in non-running condition until 1989 when it was sold to the third owner.
  • Third owner had the engine rebuilt with original parts and also replaced the radiator.
  • K.A.R. purchased the car in 1991 with 34,646 miles
  • K.A.R. sold this fastback in 1991 with 34,646 miles
  • Titled to Ohio owner on 3/20/91 with 34,878 miles
  • Ohio owner sold it to his father in April 1994 with 35,236 miles
  • Purchased by K.A.R. in October 2009 with 35,434 miles

It is extremely rare to have this much history on a Classic Mustang.   This fastback has traveled 3,434 miles since the engine was rebuilt in California at 32,000 miles in 1989.   20 years and only 3,434 miles.   We have driven this fastback just around our property.   The engine runs quietly, makes no unusual noises, and does not smoke.   Once we check the brakes, transmission, etc. we plan to drive it at least 200 miles to insure everything functions properly.

This is a structurally solid fastback.   It is a car that can be driven and enjoyed while receiving a gradual restoration.   A-Code fastbacks carrying their original color and trim are rare finds in today’s market.   Historical production records reveal that only 7,889 1966 fastbacks with the pony interior were manufactured.   There is no way to know how many were emberglo with the emberglo and parchment pony interior; obviously, not many.
