If you would prefer a manual rack and pinion system versus a power rack and pinion system, and many Mustang owners do, K.A.R. offers two excellent choices. The first is a direct bolt on system produced by TOTAL CONTROL PRODUCTS. This system utilizes the factory mounting holes from the front tubular crossmember. The manual rack actually replaces this crossmember. The system comes complete and ready to install. If the original steering column is going to used, the installer will have to cut the steering shaft to accommodate the coupler that connects to the intermediate shaft. The instructions are quite clear on how to accomplish this. This manual system works really well. The typical factory system is 4 turns lock-to-lock while the TOTAL CONTROL system is 3 turns lock to-lock. Steering is tight and immediate. It is a huge improvement over stock classic Mustang steering.
The first 5 pictures show this manual system actually installed on a 1966 Mustang. The views are obviously from under the car. Hopefully, you will be able to see just how nice this system fits. The owner of this system wanted it refinished to provide a more stock appearance. The actual TOTAL CONTROL SYSTEM is a combination of blue, natural metal finish, and highly polished components much like their power system pictured in our power rack and pinion section.
The next two pictures show the system coming from the firewall. You can see the coupler and how it is connected to the steering shaft.
