K.A.R. has installed many different front suspension systems from stock to extreme. The most frequently publicized front suspensions seem to be as follows:
IFS - Independent Front Suspension; Mustang II-Type design
McPherson Strut-Type Suspension
Coil Over Shock/Tubular Control Arm Suspension
Each of these front suspensions works very well and substantially improves the handling characteristics of a classic Mustang. Although they are uniquely different from each other in design the one thing they do have in common is their price tag. They are expensive systems. Although these systems are well worth their costs, they can be either overkill or out of reach for many Mustang enthusiasts. The IFS suspension offers the lowest initial parts investment but requires substantially more labor hours as well as structural welding for installation. A classic Mustang owner can expect to pay approximately $2,000 for an IFS Kit and in excess of $3,000 for front strut or coil over systems. A few available upgrades can easily push the investment closer to $4,000. If cost is not an issue, these are three great front suspension choices.
Middle Ground
K.A.R. set out to develop completely bolt-in front suspension systems that would dramatically improve classic Mustang handling while falling within the budget range of a much larger segment of the classic Mustang population. We wanted these bolt-in systems to not only easily handle aggressive driving but also look "trick" when showing them off to friends. Most stock systems today and even most urethane systems have major components that are not greaseable and, therefore, squeak. We wanted the K.A.R.-Tracker front suspensions to include greaseable fittings for such components as the front sway bar and the coil spring perches that typically are not greaseable. Of course, all K.A.R.-Tracker systems would have to have greaseable tie rod ends and control arms. Our final two considerations were components that looked as close to stock components as possible and powder coated for protection and ease of cleaning. We studied and tested a number of manufacturers' products finally arriving at front suspension systems comprised of components from the following well-known and respected performance manufacturers:
- Maier Racing
- Edelbrock
- Prothane
- Koni
- Moog
- Scott Drake
- Energy Suspension
- KYB
We have integrated selected products from these manufacturers into fully integrated high performance front suspension kits. These kits have been installed and tested on K.A.R. Mustangs, as well as customers' Mustangs. They really tighten up a front end and dramatically improve handling. When selecting your kit, please select the part number for either red or black urethane bushings. The red bushing kit really looks trick and makes a bold statement. The black bushing kit presents an unobtrusive look but functions equal to the red kit. The black kit provides more of a stealth appearance but yet looks rich and aggressive.
