Date Codes-Understanding Them
home » knowledge center » date codes-understanding them
We receive many inquiries involving date codes or the "build date" of various classic Mustangs. Some inquiries are simply from curious enthusiasts while others need to know their date codes for technical reasons. A few examples of why certain build dates are important are as follows:
  • Ford did not build a 1965 Mustang GT or equip a Mustang with a deluxe "pony" interior prior to mid-February 1965. If your A-code Mustang has GT accessories and you're wondering if it is a true GT car, the first check would be the date code. If it was produced prior to February 1965, it could not have been a true GT. The same holds true for deluxe "pony" interior Mustangs.

  • If you own a 1967 to 1970 Mustang and you are replacing your fuel lines, you should know that 6 and 8 cylinder Mustangs, after 2/01/67 had a two-piece fuel tank to pump line. Before this date this line was one piece. Knowing your build date is obviously important when selecting fuel lines.

  • If you own a 1968 Mustang and you are replacing your quarter panels or putting on quarter panel skins, you should be aware that prior to 2/15/68 the rear marker lights were indented into the quarter panels. After this date they became reflectors and were not indented into the quarter panels. Knowing your build date will enable you to select the correct replacement parts.
Ford made many model year "running changes" over the production history of classic Mustangs. Often times when an enthusiast orders a part, he or she will be asked, "What is the build date of your Mustang?"

Data tag build dates are really the scheduled build date of a Mustang. Often times these cars were days or even weeks later than the data tag scheduled build date. Generally speaking, scheduled build dates and actual build dates were very close in time.

You will find your build date on your door data tag under the heading marked DATE. We have published a build date chart by year at the end of this article. All build dates will be structured with a number and a letter. Let's assume you have a 1966 Mustang and your data tag, under the DATE heading, says 21B. Go to our 1966 chart, look for B and you will see that it is February 1966. Therefore, your Mustang was produced on February 21, 1966.

Data tag missing? Do not despair. If your data tag is missing, there are ways to determine the build date of your Mustang. First, you will need to know your VIN number (vehicle identification number or serial number). Then you can refer to In Search of Mustangs, an excellent two book series written by Jim Smart and Jim Haskell. This book lists thousands of classic Mustang VIN numbers and their build dates. It is quite easy to locate a Mustang very close to your serial number and determine that Mustang's build date. Generally you can come within a few days of your Mustang's build date. Since build dates were scheduled build dates and not necessarily the actual build date, this is close enough.

We, at K.A.R. Auto Group, hope that you find this information useful. Feel free to contact us should you have questions or need additional information.
